The Four Tiers of Grocery Shopping

Medellín's grocery landscape breaks neatly into four tiers. Where you shop can mean the difference between a $38 week and a $163 week — for essentially the same meals. Here's the breakdown.

D1 and Ara — The Budget Champions

These discount chains are everywhere — you'll find one within walking distance of any apartment in Laureles, El Poblado, or Envigado. They carry their own private-label brands that are 30–50% cheaper than name brands. The trade-off: smaller stores, limited variety, no frills. But for rice, beans, pasta, eggs, bread, cleaning supplies, and basics, they can't be beat.

Éxito — The All-Rounder

Éxito is Colombia's biggest supermarket chain (think Walmart). Full deli counter, bakery, electronics, clothing, pharmacy — all in one. The grocery section is solid mid-range with good produce, meat, and a decent international aisle. Multiple locations in El Poblado, Laureles, and Envigado. This is where most nomads end up doing their main weekly shop.

Carulla — When You Need Imports

Carulla is owned by the Éxito Group but positioned as their premium brand. This is where you find imported cheeses, specialty ingredients, organic produce, international wines, and products you recognize from home. Prices are 40–80% higher than D1 for comparable items. The Carulla in El Poblado is a popular nomad hangout.

The Smart Shopping Strategy

Most experienced nomads use a two-store system: buy staples and basics at D1 or Ara (60–70% of your grocery list), then fill in specialty items, fresh produce, and imports at Éxito or Carulla. This approach keeps your weekly grocery budget around $50–$75 while still eating well.

Food Delivery

Rappi is the dominant delivery app in Colombia — groceries, restaurant food, pharmacy, liquor, and literally anything else. Also available: iFood, Domicilios.com, and Uber Eats (less dominant in Colombia). A Rappi Prime subscription reduces delivery fees and is worth it if you order more than twice a week.
