Almost everything can be delivered to your door in Medellín, from lunch to groceries to a package from abroad. What decides whether it arrives smoothly is the last 50 meters: the address you wrote, the portero at the entrance and the rules of your building. This guide explains how local deliveries and parcels work in an apartment, and what Colombian customs says about international orders.
Food and Grocery Delivery
Delivery apps such as Rappi, which was founded in Bogotá in 2015, operate across Colombia, and supermarkets also take orders through their own websites and apps. Which services cover your address depends on your neighborhood, so install two or three and see what works.
- Drop the pin, then check the text. Apps can misread Colombian addresses. Our address system guide explains why a letter suffix or the word "Sur" changes everything.
- Add the building name, tower and apartment number in the notes field, and a phone number the rider can reach.
- Tell the app whether to leave the order at the portería or to call you, and be ready to come down: in many buildings the rider stops at the entrance.
For supermarket basics, see our grocery guide.
The Portería Handoff
Most buildings route deliveries through the portería. How it works varies, so ask the portero or the administración when you move in.
- Does the building let riders enter? Many do not. Some call you from the desk; some hold the order until you arrive.
- Do they keep packages for you? Ask how long they keep them and whether they log the delivery.
- Who is allowed to sign? If you are away, tell the portero in advance which packages to accept and from whom.
- What are the hours? A portería may not be staffed at all hours, and couriers often deliver in the daytime.
Be gracious with the staff. They carry real responsibility for everyone's packages, and a clear note such as "paquete para el apartamento 502" (package for apartment 502) with your name helps them match deliveries. See also our security and portería questions.
Local Parcels
When you buy from an online store inside the country, the seller chooses the courier. Colombia's official postal operator is Servicios Postales Nacionales, branded 4-72, whose site lets you track a shipment by its guide number. Confirm that the shipping label shows the building, tower and unit, and give a phone number that works. Tracking updates usually arrive by text, email or the courier's app.
- If you will not be home, ask the courier to leave the package at the portería, or choose a pickup point if the seller offers one.
- Check that the name on the package matches the name you gave the portero.
- Open and inspect the package when you receive it, and photograph any damage before you sign.
Orders From Abroad: What Customs Says
Practical points from DIAN's page and doctrine:
- Paperwork. The support for these imports is a simplified import declaration plus the sales invoice or other proof of the purchase, and the goods are released once the declaration is filed and the taxes are paid. 4-72's site lets you download the letter to pay IVA with your guide number and has online payment for international shipments.
- Phones. One mobile phone per shipment per recipient, and the shipping guide must list the IMEI. Splitting shipments to the same recipient is prohibited.
- Restricted and prohibited goods. Medicines, food, medical equipment and plant material or seeds are restricted, with conditions (INVIMA or ICA rules apply, with a limit of six units). Narcotics, counterfeit goods, weapons, live animals and currency are prohibited. Do not ship medication without checking; our healthcare guide is the better starting point for prescriptions.
- Unexpected fees. If a text message demands a payment through a link you do not recognize, verify it with the carrier directly before paying. Fake delivery messages are a common scam worldwide.
- Local contact. Use the full local address with a working Colombian phone number. Our SIM card guide explains how to get one.
Giving the Right Address
A complete delivery address in Medellín usually has these parts: the street address with the correct suffix (and "Sur" if relevant); the building or complex name, tower or block, and apartment number; the barrio and city; your name exactly as the portero will know it; and a phone number that works on WhatsApp or by call. Add a landmark in the notes. As the address guide says, a recognizable building or business nearby is often more reliable than text alone.
Large Items, Tips and Etiquette
Moving a sofa, a mattress or an appliance into an apartment is a different job from receiving a parcel. Many buildings set rules for large deliveries: certain hours, use of the service elevator, advance notice to the administración, and sometimes a fee or deposit. Ask before you buy. If you are furnishing a long lease, our guide to furnishing an unfurnished apartment covers the planning side.
Riders often work long hours in all weather, so be ready when they arrive and walk down to meet them if the building asks you to. Our tipping guide covers what is customary. If something is wrong with an order, report it through the app rather than arguing at the door, since the app keeps the record.
When You Rent
Ask about deliveries at the viewing. Does the building accept parcels? Are riders allowed in? Is there a locker or a delivery room? One with clear delivery rules and a helpful portería makes everyday life noticeably easier.
The Bottom Line
Write the address carefully, drop the pin, tell the portero what to expect, and treat international orders with care. Most delivery trouble comes from a missing apartment number or a surprise at customs, and both are easy to prevent.

Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on the building. Many buildings keep riders at the portería, so you walk down. Ask the portero or administración how it works.
Some buildings do and some do not. Ask when you move in, and tell the portero in advance which packages to accept if you will be away.
Include the street address with its suffix, the building and tower, the apartment number, the barrio, your name and a working phone number. Add a nearby landmark in the notes.
Possibly. DIAN's page lists a 10% tariff and 19% IVA on postal and courier imports, with no tariff when the FOB value is USD 200 or less and IVA waived only in specific free-trade cases. The rules changed during 2026, so check DIAN and the carrier's notice before ordering.
Do not pay it right away. Contact the carrier through its official website or app to confirm, since fake delivery messages are common.
