Test-Drive Medellín: How Long Should Your First Stay Be?

Aim for about four weeks. A week tells you whether you like the view and the coffee. A month tells you whether you like your life there: the sleep, the internet, the commute, the errands and the weather on a gray Tuesday. If you can stretch to six or eight weeks, even better, but four weeks is usually long enough for the deal-breakers to show up.

A cost breakdown for a month in the city is in our one-month budget. This guide is about the decision: how long to try the city before you commit to a long lease, and what to test while you do.

Why One Week Is Too Short

The first days are a honeymoon. Everything is new, you are mostly sightseeing and you have not yet sat at your desk through a full work week. A week does not show you:

Three Trial Lengths Compared

LengthWhat it testsWhat it misses
1 to 2 weeksFirst impressions, transport, neighborhood feel, whether you can handle the basicsRoutines, noise cycles, your real work schedule
3 to 4 weeksDaily routine, internet, sleep, errands, cost per week, a rainy stretchSeasonal patterns, the dip after novelty
6 to 8 weeksAll of the above plus the post-honeymoon mood, social ties and a second neighborhoodLong-term seasons, renewal and rent-change experience

If you are unsure, a four-week stay followed by a decision is almost always the right size. You can extend it if you love it, and you have not pre-committed if you do not.

What to Test While You Are There

  1. Sleep. Rate noise on a weeknight and a weekend. Our noise guide explains what to listen for.
  2. Internet at your working hours. Run tests during your actual calls, not just at midday. See the internet guide.
  3. Hot water and water pressure. Use them daily and ask how the water is heated.
  4. The daily errands loop. Time the walk to groceries, a pharmacy, a café and transit.
  5. Getting to the places you will actually go. Try the metro, taxis and ride apps at the hours you would use them.
  6. Weather and air. Notice how you feel in the rain and on the days with hazier air.
  7. Your social loop. Go to one meetup, one class, one gym visit and one local café more than once.
  8. The building. Watch how the front desk handles packages and visitors, and how the elevator behaves at peak hours.
  9. Your Spanish friction. Notice how much daily life depends on it.

A Simple Four-Week Plan

Week 1: Settle. Handle the basics from our first-week checklist. Do not judge yet.

Week 2: Build routines. Work your normal schedule, cook some meals, find the gym and the café. Note what annoys you.

Week 3: Stress-test. Spend a rainy day indoors. Take calls from the apartment. Stay home on a weekend night. Try a different part of the city by day.

Week 4: Decide. Score what you saw, then visit two or three buildings in the areas you liked. Use the in-person viewing test list.

Scorecard idea: every few days, rate sleep, work setup, errands, social life and mood from 1 to 5. Patterns beat memories, and a trend downward in week three tells you something a vacation glow hides.

If You Only Have Two Weeks

Sometimes two weeks is all you get. Make it count. Work your real schedule from day two, not just sightseeing. Spend at least one weekend night at home to hear the building and the street. Visit a second neighborhood by day to compare. Then treat the result as a shortlist rather than a verdict, and keep your next move flexible: book a furnished monthly stay with clear exit terms before you sign anything longer, so the second stay can finish the test the first one started.

Choose a Format That Keeps You Free

The trial only works if you can leave without pain. Look for a furnished monthly stay with a clear end date and exit terms. Our guide to furnished monthly contracts versus a real lease explains why these contracts are more flexible, and what protections you give up. Then:

Check the Calendar and Your Permit

A trial during a festival or holiday peak is not representative of normal life or normal prices. Read the high-season guide. Also look at what your entry stamp allows. How long you can stay depends on your nationality and permit, so confirm it with Migración Colombia before you plan the trial. See how to extend your stay.

The Bottom Line

Plan four weeks, test for real life rather than tourism, and shortlist two or three buildings before you leave your trial apartment. If you are escaping a cold season, a long trial can double as a seasonal base. When you know what you want, use the form below.

Frequently Asked Questions

Usually yes for the main deal-breakers: sleep, internet, routine and cost. A month does not show every season, so build in a review point after the first stretch of a longer lease.

It can help if you are torn between two very different areas. Do at least two weeks in each so the novelty does not distort the comparison, and expect to spend time on a second move.

A hotel is fine for the first days. For a real test you want a kitchen, a desk and a long-stay routine, so a furnished apartment or coliving room is closer to how you would live.

A furnished monthly arrangement with a clear end date and written exit terms. Avoid large prepayments and read the contract carefully, because the legal protections differ from a standard residential lease.

It depends on your nationality, your entry stamp or record and any visa. Check your own entry record and the official Migración Colombia information, and plan the trial inside that limit.
