Laundry is the daily-life detail that decides whether an apartment feels easy or exhausting. In Medellín you will find a few different setups: a washing machine in the unit, a shared laundry room, or a drop-off service nearby. Drying is often the harder part, because many homes do not have dryers and wet weeks slow everything down. This guide explains each option and the questions to ask before you rent.
Option 1: A Washing Machine in the Unit
Many furnished rentals include a washing machine, and unfurnished apartments often have a laundry area (zona de ropas) with connections for one. This is the most convenient setup, but check the details.
- Does it work? Ask to see it run, or at least confirm that it is connected and drains properly.
- Where is it? Inside the kitchen, in a utility area, or on a balcony. Balcony machines are exposed to humidity and rain.
- Is it included? In an unfurnished flat, never assume the machine stays. Ask in writing, and add it to the inventory.
- Hot water? Some machines only take cold water, which is fine for most clothes. If it matters to you, ask.
- Who repairs it? Put this in the contract. Our lease guide explains how to list appliances in the inventory.
Option 2: A Shared Laundry Room
Some buildings have a common laundry room. It can be a great deal, or a headache. Ask:
- How many machines are there, and how do residents book them?
- What are the hours, and is there a cost per cycle?
- Is there a place to hang or dry clothes, and is it covered?
- Is the room within the building's secure area or outside it?
If the answers are vague, treat the shared room as a bonus, not a plan.
Option 3: Lavanderías (Drop-Off Laundry)
Neighborhood laundries are common, and for many people they are the easiest way to deal with laundry in a short stay. You drop off a bag, they wash, dry and fold, and you pick it up later, often the same day or the next. Here is how to use them well.
- Ask how they charge. Some price by weight, some by the item. Ask for the current rate and the turnaround time, and whether there is a pickup or delivery option.
- Find one near you. Search a map app for "lavandería" near your address and read the recent reviews. Check that it is open at hours you can reach.
- Ask about care. If you have delicate or technical clothing, say so when you drop it off.
- Count your items. Keep a quick note, or a photo, of what you hand over.
- Check what the building allows. Some buildings let you arrange pickup at the portería; others prefer that you carry your laundry out.
Drying Clothes
This is where most newcomers struggle. Dryers are less common in Colombian homes than in North America, and drying space matters more than the washer itself. Find out:
- Is there a dryer, and what powers it?
- Is there a clothesline, a rack, or a covered drying area?
- Does the balcony get direct sun in the afternoon? West-facing balconies get hot afternoon sun, as noted in our climate guide.
- Does the building allow clothes to hang where they can be seen from the street? Some buildings restrict this, so ask.
A foldable rack, a few hangers, and a window that opens give you a dependable setup in a small flat.
Humid weeks
When the weather is wet, clothes take much longer to dry, and a damp pile of laundry can make a small apartment smell stale. In the wettest stretches, use fewer big loads, hang items where air can move, avoid piling damp clothes in a closet, and send heavy items such as jeans or towels to a lavandería. A Simple Weekly Routine
Most people settle into one of two rhythms. In the first, you wash small loads at home twice a week, use a rack by an open window, and send only bulky items out. In the second, you collect one bag a week and take it to a lavandería, which suits short stays and flats without a machine. Both work. What does not work is waiting until you have nothing clean, then trying to dry a full load in a wet week.
A few small purchases make either routine smoother: a laundry bag for dirty clothes, a foldable drying rack, a pack of hangers, and a small amount of detergent you can buy at any supermarket. Our grocery guide shows where to find household basics, and the packing list helps you decide how many clothes to bring so that laundry stays manageable.
If you use a shared machine or drying area, be considerate: collect your clothes promptly, clean the lint filter if there is one, and follow posted hours so you do not collect complaints from neighbors.
How to Ask When Renting
Add these questions to your viewing. They only take a minute and they can save you weeks of annoyance.
- ¿La lavadora está incluida? (Is the washing machine included?)
- ¿Tiene secadora o un lugar para secar la ropa? (Is there a dryer or a place to dry clothes?)
- ¿Hay lavandería en el edificio? (Is there a laundry room in the building?)
- ¿Puedo colgar la ropa en el balcón? (Can I hang clothes on the balcony?)
- ¿Quién arregla la lavadora si se daña? (Who repairs the washer if it breaks?)
Cost and Convenience
Prices vary by service and neighborhood, so ask for the current rate rather than relying on a number from the internet. If laundry is a big part of your week, compare the cost of a drop-off service against the convenience of an apartment with an in-unit machine. Our furnished versus unfurnished guide shows how to weigh appliance inclusions, and our utilities guide explains how extra water and electricity use shows up on your bill.
The Bottom Line
Washing is easy. Drying is the part to plan for. Ask whether the machine is included, whether you can dry clothes on site, and where the nearest lavandería is. Add laundry to your viewing list, then tell us in your request if an in-unit washer is a must-have.
