Escaping Northern Winter: A November-to-April Plan for Medellín

If you want to skip northern winter in Medellín, plan around the rental calendar and the water supply as much as the weather. Temperatures barely change from month to month. What changes is how crowded the city is, how much choice you have in furnished apartments and, this year, how much rain the valley gets. This plan walks through November to April in order and tells you what to do before each step.

It is written for people who want a real winter base of roughly four to six months, not a two-week holiday. If you are Canadian and your main worry is the days-away-from-home math, read our Canadian snowbird guide first, then come back here for the apartment side.

Why a Winter Here Works

Medellín sits high in a valley, so temperatures stay close to the same all year. Our best time to move guide puts the average around 72°F (22°C) in every month. You are not chasing sun the way you would in a beach town. You are choosing between drier weeks and wetter weeks, and between busy rental weeks and quiet ones.

November to April touches almost every pattern the city has: the tail of the second rainy season, the December lights, the drier early months, and the first rains of the next season.

Month by Month, November to April

The weather column follows the usual pattern described by Colombia's weather institute, IDEAM: October and November are the wettest months of the second rainy season, rain tapers in December, January and February mark the start of the drier months, and the first rainy season begins around mid-March. It is a typical pattern, not a forecast (see the 2026 to 2027 note below). The rental columns come from our own guides.

November: learn, do not commit. Book a short furnished stay and use the quieter market to compare; our high-season guide calls September to November the easiest window to negotiate. December: furnished inventory tightens and many owners reprice, so ask in writing whether your rate holds through the holidays. January and February: the cleanest time to move to the apartment you actually want. March and April: Semana Santa can create a short domestic travel spike, so read your exit terms early; our moving out guide covers the handover and inventory check.

The 2026 to 2027 Twist: El Niño, Water and Air

This winter is not a typical one, and it affects renters directly. As of October 2026:

None of this means you should cancel. Ask each building how it stores water and how it handled the 2026 cuts, confirm your exact address with EPM, and check air and water notices before you commit to a long term.

When to Book and How

Work backward from the December crunch. Our high-season guide suggests starting a search for December to February stays around August. In practice:

If you want to stay through April, a single multi-month arrangement signed in the quieter weeks is usually easier than hunting again in December. Read our short-term versus long-term comparison before you choose a contract type.

Three Ways to Structure the Months

Whichever you pick, ask in writing what the monthly amount includes, what happens if you leave early, and whether the rate can change.

Choosing a Base, and What to Settle Before You Fly

For a first winter, most people want walkable streets, reliable internet and easy metro access. Laureles and El Poblado are the usual starting points, and our Poblado versus Laureles comparison sets out the trade-offs.

Confirm your permitted stay. In an April 2026 letter, Migración Colombia describes a 90-day entry permit for visa-exempt foreigners on a short, unpaid stay. It can be extended by another 90 days without leaving the country, as long as the total does not pass 180 days in the same calendar year. A November-to-April winter straddles two calendar years, so ask Migración how your days are counted instead of assuming. The letter also cites a fee of COP 270,000 per procedure for Canadian nationals (Resolución 1422 de 2024); confirm which procedures it covers. Check the rules for your own passport before you book.

The Bottom Line

Arrive in November, be settled before December 1, use January and February to fine tune, and plan your exit before the April rains. This year, add two checks: how the building handles water cuts, and what IDEAM and the metropolitan authority are reporting close to your flight. Frequently Asked Questions

November is a good arrival month for a winter stay because the rental market is quiet and you can compare places before the December rush. Aim to be settled before December 1.

Temperatures stay close to the same all year, so the difference between months is mostly rain. In the usual IDEAM pattern, October and November are the wettest, rain tapers in December, January and February are drier, and rain returns from about mid-March. This winter is unusual because IDEAM expects a strong El Niño with less rain than normal, so check its latest bulletin before you fly.

Often yes, once you have seen the place. Start with a short first stay, then sign a longer term in the quieter weeks. Ask for the terms in writing, including what happens if you leave early.

It depends on your passport. Migración Colombia describes a 90-day entry permit for visa-exempt visitors on a short, unpaid stay, extendable by 90 more days without leaving, up to 180 days in a calendar year. Confirm the rule for your nationality on the official site, and read our Canadian snowbird guide if that applies to you.
